When do you need cash in Turkey?
While bank cards are fairly well accepted in tourist areas, this is no longer entirely the case once you venture off the beaten path in Turkey. It is therefore essential to have TRY in cash on a daily basis to avoid any frustration.
Some small businesses require cash payments, particularly outside major cities. This includes certain bakeries, local grocery shops, and food stalls in markets.
Markets are especially places where cash is preferable: not only will you be able to make purchases at every stall, but you will also find it easier to negotiate than with a card.
You will also need cash for tipping in Turkish cafés and restaurants. Generally, it is customary to leave 5–10% of the total bill to thank the staff.
