Don’t forget to buy Bahrain Dinars (BHD) before you leave for Bahrain

To prepare for your trip, we advise you to find out as much as possible about your destination country so as to have a nice stay. In Bahrain, the local currency is the Bahrain dinar (BHD). We would always advise you to take cash with you as you won’t be able to pay by card everywhere. Buy bahrain dinars before you leave to get a good price for your exchange rate.

Practical tips for planning your budget

For travellers on a budget, expect to pay 60 bhd per person. This includes accommodation, food and car hire. Most tours and activities are free. If you have a larger budget, you can expect to pay between 120 and 250 bhd. Accommodation will cost you an average of 34 bhd.

If you want to try traditional meals in a mid-range restaurant, you will pay around 6 bahraini dinars.Be aware that tipping is customary in Bahrain. Expect to tip taxi drivers, petrol station attendants and waiters between 10 and 15%. In this case, it would be a good idea to buy your bahrain dinars beforehand, even before your departure.

When do you need cash in Bahrain?

Bahrain accepts card and contactless payments very well, but having some BHD in cash can still be very useful in certain situations.

Some stalls in traditional souks, such as Manama Souq or Muharraq Souq, remain cash-only. If you want to buy clothing, spices, or just a few souvenirs, we recommend bringing BHD in cash to make your purchases.

Some taxis also prefer cash payments. Occasionally, drivers may claim that their card terminal is not working to encourage passengers to pay in cash. It is therefore wise to have some on hand just in case.

Finally, having BHD in cash is a great way to maintain control over your travel budget and avoid unnecessary spending. Exchanging your euros for Bahraini dinars before your trip is a good habit to adopt to benefit from better exchange rates and make the most of your stay in Bahrain.
