Buy Tunisian Dinars (TND) Before Travelling to Tunisia
Planning a long and exotic trip to Tunisia? Preparing well is key to making the most of your stay, including understanding local customs and day-to-day practices. One of the most important aspects to consider is the use of local currency.
To travel with peace of mind, we recommend bringing some cash in Tunisian Dinars (TND), the country’s official currency. To do so, it’s best to convert your euros to dinars before departure to secure the most favourable EUR/TND exchange rate.
Tips
A budget of around 140 TND per person will typically cover a night’s accommodation, one restaurant meal and another from a fast-food outlet, as well as transport.
Tipping is not mandatory in Tunisia, but it’s appreciated – a 10% tip is considered generous. A traditional meal in a mid-range restaurant will cost about 25 TND, while a fast-food option is around 10 TND.

When do you need cash in Tunisia?
Card payments are becoming increasingly accepted, but cash remains the preferred method of payment in Tunisia, especially outside tourist areas. It is therefore essential to have TND in cash with you during your stay.
Many small local businesses do not accept card payments at all. This is the case, for example, for neighbourhood grocery shops, local bakeries, small cafés and tea houses. Generally speaking, cash is the norm in Tunisia.
Souks and markets are also a must-visit during your trip. Most purchases are made in cash, whether you are buying clothing, food or souvenirs.
Venturing outside tourist areas or major cities makes cash payments almost indispensable. Network coverage is not always reliable, meaning card terminals are often not an option.
About the Tunisian Dinar (TND)
Denominations:
- Banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 TND
- Coins: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 millimes; ½, 1, 5 TND
The dinar was introduced in 1960.
Locals often skip saying the currency name in conversation – for example, they might simply say “chamsin alf” (fifty thousand) instead of “50 dinars.”
