Buy Kuwaiti Dinars (KWD) before your trip to Kuwait

Planning a trip to this beautiful Gulf country that’s sure to impress with its stunning architecture? Kuwait is a fascinating destination offering plenty of activities for travellers. However, before you go, it’s important to gather information about your destination, especially when it comes to the cost of living, local customs, and the use of the local currency. The local currency in Kuwait is the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD). We recommend converting your euros into Kuwaiti dinars and carrying some cash, as you may find yourself in situations where card payments aren’t accepted. To travel with peace of mind, be sure to exchange your euros into Kuwaiti dinars before you depart.

Budget to plan for Kuwait

You should expect to spend around 62 KWD per day per person. This includes one night’s accommodation, meals, and public transport.

You can easily find accommodation on dedicated platforms like Airbnb. Alternatively, a mid-range hotel stay will cost around 47 KWD per night.

When do you need cash in Kuwait?

Although Kuwait primarily operates with card and contactless payments, it is still useful to have some KWD in cash during your trip.

In certain areas far from major cities or less touristy, you may be required to pay in cash. This is the case, for example, in some family-run restaurants, local bakeries, or small neighbourhood grocery shops.

In traditional souks and markets, cash payments are often appreciated by vendors. Make sure to have KWD in cash if you plan to shop there.

In general, we still recommend having cash on you when travelling in Kuwait. This allows you to benefit from better exchange rates by reserving your currency online before departure, and also helps you maintain control over your travel budget.
